Day 18: Rainy Day

I’m slowly being fully dressed as a nun – with all the necessary accessories. Yesterday, I got to try on winter coats, and today, fitting for the weather, a raincoat as well. Of course, everything is black and ankle-length.

Every day during my novitiate – at least that’s the plan – I go out into the garden for at least half an hour. So far, it’s never been a problem, and it simply feels good. Today was the first time it really poured while I was out. And it was wonderful. Just standing there with a rain jacket and hood, watching water falling into water (the rain into our trout pond) and forming ripples – simply beautiful. Water has something incredibly calming and fascinating about it.

Completely unfazed by the weather – our ducks

The ducks didn’t mind the weather at all, and I even spotted a few sisters working in the garden.

Almost every afternoon, we have novitiate classes. Our subjects include: liturgy, house customs, theology, house and order history, and the Rule of St. Benedict. I even signed a training contract when I entered the order, which outlines these subjects as well as insurance details. So, I’m officially in training to become a nun. Certainly, it’s a training with poor pay, but with excellent prospects for a permanent position!
