Day 36: Too Warm

Today, it was strikingly warm outside, and when I discovered blooming daisies in the garden, I realized it had probably been too warm for November for several days. On some trees, fresh shoots can also be seen. Every gardener knows that too much warmth at the wrong time is harmful to plant growth. Trees usually prepare for winter in autumn by responding to the increasing cold. They withdraw completely, conserving their energy to bloom all the more magnificently in spring.

Perhaps one could say that the novitiate year is like the winter for spiritual life. Not because of spiritual darkness or coldness, but because it is a time of retreat—a turning inward to gather strength. This allows one to emerge afterward, fresher and more radiant, to have an impact on the world.

And perhaps I should understand the coldness I sometimes feel in human interactions as a small reminder from God that it is winter for me right now. If all I experienced were warmth and recognition, I might, like the trees outside, produce buds too early—buds that would only perish painfully in the frost.
